The “Art Deco” Era

The Era of Style

Why Art Deco? The Art Deco movement, oft referred to as the most important art movement of the 20th Century, also saw the wealthy titans and visionary tycoons of New York build the great world class buildings of the day, like the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and some of the most grand signature hotels.

The movement symbolized progress, enthusiasm, ambition, and excitement. It was about huge scale and a grandness of vision. It’s a theme that is the right tone and tempo for what Calgary is experiencing today.

Just as New York was coming into its own on the world stage from the turn of the 20th century through the 1930s, that era is an inspiring model for Calgary’s growing wealth, power, and ambition, in the early years of the 21st century.

Calgary is a city rapidly emerging as a major cosmopolitan center, not just an oil or economic center, with growing populations of business and cultural elite.  A “New Establishment” of sophisticated people who want fine dining, fine wine, theatre, arts, and luxury residences in prestige buildings with something distinctive to offer.

How appropriate that Astoria on Tenth tips its hat to old world hotel culture and the era of Art Deco style. And what glorious style it was! The heyday of the silverscreen and high society. Polish. Panache. Everything oozed graphic luxury style—the decor, the artwork, the fashion, the sleek trains and automobiles.  The 1930s movie stars. Jazz. Men in tuxedos and women in silvery slip dresses, sipping cocktails under sparkling chandeliers in a hotel lobby. Platinum pincurls and witty repartee. It was the ultimate in stylish, smart, and sophisticated living.

Tapping into this magical historic spirit, in a contemporary way, everyday, is Astoria on Tenth.
